Swimming
Roman boys liked to swim in Tiber River. Most Roman baths had swimming pools where the citizens could enjoy swimming and some women knew how to swim as well.
Horseback Riding
Roman boys participated in horseback riding from a very young age because every Roman was required to be a good equestrian.
Wrestling and Boxing
These were the Romans' favourite sports and they were usually carried out in a central field in Roman baths. Wrestling and boxing could help to build body strength and improve the general health.
Running
Running was another favourite activity of Roman boys. They usually went to Campus Martius, a spacious field next to Tiber River, to compete with one another.
Hunting and Fishing
In the countryside, Roman boys usually went hunting with their fathers to learn marksmanship. Fishing was also a very popular past time for the Romans.
Ball Games
Romans played ball games such as handball, soccer, field hockey and dodge ball. Some women also participate in ball games.
Board Games
Ancient Romans played different types of board games such as Dice, Roman Checkers and Roman Chess.
Public Entertainment
The Ancient Roman Government wanted to keep the people contented and to prevent uprisings so they provided the citizens entertainment, mostly free of charge. There were many theaters in the city where the citizens could enjoy different performances, for example chariot races, musicals, theatrical performances and gladiatorial combat.
